I think I'll still plan to share about it, but after the guild meeting.

By the way, I wanted to show you the cool triple zip bag that Leila gave me for finding her a place to stay in Austin or because she's just really nice.
One thing I will share from QuiltCon is about the workshop I took. Registration for classes was crazy with classes selling out in nanoseconds, so most of the classes I was interested in were gone immediately. Although, I already know embroidery stitches, I was curious about the class "Redwork in Modern Quilting" with Rachel Hobson. I wanted to know how embroidery was translated from traditional redwork to modern quilting.
Although I already knew how to do these stitches, I did learn a few new tricks. I am very glad I took the class because it reminded me that I really enjoy handwork. It was also great to meet Rachel because she's a very nice, interesting, and fun person.

I also believe that taking the class pushed me to respond to a recent email from Penguin and Fish looking for people to stitch up samples of the embroidery kits being sold. I sent in some pictures of my work, said I'd love to, and was chosen to be a stitcher! Yay!
When I found out that QuiltCon was going to be in Austin, Texas, I sent a message to my college roommate Anna, who lives there. I asked her if my friend Pam and I could stay with her and she graciously said yes. Well, it turned out that Leila was planning to go to QuiltCon and was looking for a place for her and her baby to stay. Again, being a generous hostess, Anna said she had plenty of room and Leila and her little Becca stayed with us too.

Little did we know that we'd be staying on a ranch!
I didn't have my camera when we went shopping, but that was an interesting experience. There are several quirky stores and I'd never seen so many dismembered mannequin hands in my life. There was also a facial hair contest that Kim from My Go-Go Life tells about. They aren't kidding when they call Austin weird.
Unfortunately, my friend Pam became very sick pretty soon after that last picture was taken and that was only our first full day there, so it wasn't a great trip for her. I was at the convention center a lot so I feel like I only got to experience a tiny bit of Austin, so maybe I'll have to go back some day.Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-79364258571558233002013-03-06T12:08:00.000-06:002013-03-06T12:08:57.279-06:00I'm back!So for the 2 or 3 of you who read my blog, I apologize for not posting for such a long time! I was preparing for QuiltCon, at QuiltCon, and then recovering from QuiltCon! So you can anticipate lots of blog posts in the near future, because 1) I took lots of pictures and 2) I have things I've been thinking about and things I'm excited to share.

Today I'll just update you on what I did just before QuiltCon. First, my mother had a birthday at the beginning of February and I thought it would be fun to make her a cake that would be a surprise.

M & M decoration

The surprise inside - it's a rainbow!

It was fun to see her cut into it and realize that it wasn't just a boring old single color cake in there. :)

Then there was Valentine's Day, so I stitched up a little something for my husband.

I gave my son a bag of Sour Patch Kids. I think candy is his love language.

Then I had some bee blocks to make:

Then I wanted to see how it might look with sashing.

I think I'm going to go with the random placement, no sashing, but I do think I'll add a border to make it a bit bigger. It could be a good baby quilt size right now, but I kind of want it to be a lap quilt that I can snuggle under and feel cheerful. I'm thinking I'll make the border white with some scattered wonky stars in the various colors of the blocks. Thought, opinions, ideas? I know that it will not be chosen for anything, but it was fun to do and it is done!

I made four large greek cross squares and quilted with concentric circles. I would have liked to do something spectacular, but I do like it and even more special for me is that my son immediately claimed it. I backed it with a microfiber sheet that I got super cheap at Target on Black Friday and it's really soft. I think that was the selling point for my son, but I think maybe he liked the truck, too. :)Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-44523338980584470362013-02-04T06:00:00.000-06:002013-02-04T06:00:07.327-06:00God makes messy things beautifulWe gave Tomás the Slugs & Bugs Under Where album for Christmas. It has lots of fun songs and it's one of those CDs for kids that is actually not bad to listen to as an adult. The first Slugs & Bugs & Lullabyes album is also quite good.

Anyway, in the one we recently bought, the first song says:

God makes messy things beautiful
when you put them in His hands.
God makes messy things beautiful
like only He can.
After the showers, look for the flowers
and you'll find out it's trutiful
God makes messy things beautiful.

Of course, this is simply stated and uses a made up word so it's fun for kids, but it is a reminder that I need sometimes. There are so many things that either I mess up or are just messed up in general and remembering that He can turn it into something beautiful gives me such comfort and peace.

For my favorite story of God making messy things beautiful, check out the story of Joseph in Genesis chapters 37-45 (minus chapter 38. That's a brief strange story about one of Joseph's brothers.)Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-87062374341856052492013-02-02T20:26:00.001-06:002013-02-02T20:26:22.906-06:00I'm going to QuiltCon!In just a couple of weeks, I'll be enjoying warm temperatures, time with one of my best friends, eating in fun new places, checking out the sights in Austin, Texas, and enjoying QuiltCon!
So, to participate in the whole "I'm going to QuiltCon. Here are 5 things about me.", here are 5 things about me!

1) First and foremost, I'm a Christian and want to love God and others.

2) I can tie a maraschino cherry stem in a knot in my mouth.

3) My sister and I used to talk to each other in a made up language called Ong. Basically, you spell out each word and for every consonant, you add ong and for every vowel you say it long. For example, my name is E mong I long yong. Our favorite to say was our grandma's name (Helene Mowen) Hong E long E nong E Mong O wong E nong! :) Really, say it fast. It's fun.

4) Speaking of my Grandma Mowen, I miss her very much. She was a quilter, crafter, and wonderful lady. She passed away when I was 18 and I have only started sewing in the past few years so we didn't get the opportunity to really share our excitement or love of quilting. I find myself frequently wishing that I could ask her opinion about a quilt I'm making, but I'm so thankful for the time that I knew her and that I have quilts that she has made.

5) I get to stay with my college roommate while in Austin! Anna visited me here a couple years ago and now I get to visit her. She is graciously letting me, my friend Pam, Leila from my quilt guild, and Leila's baby stay at her place.

I decided to figure out something for the Madrona Road Challenge. I would have liked to try to think of something brilliant and creative, but since nothing brilliant was coming to my mind, I just decided to try a couple of blocks that I have always liked and never done.

Churn Dash and Greek Cross - actually the same block!

I planned the four blocks out using EQ7 and although I didn't have the Madrona Road fabrics in my fabric library, I made do with similar colors and prints. These blocks are going to be big, like 23 inches each, I think, so the final quilt will be kind of crib sized or large wall hanging I guess. Anyway, I think I like how it's going and maybe I'll get it done in time to add it to the Flickr group for consideration to be shown in the Michael Miller booth at QuiltCon. It won't be chosen, but one can always try, right?
I had some more fabric acquisitions this week using a little bit of Christmas money I was saving for QuiltCon (oops, but the money went to a friend at a good price rather than a stranger at a high price, so I think it was a good decision) and a delivery that was part of a Christmas gift. My BIL and SIL (Alex) got me a 2 month subscription to the Stash Stack Club at Pink Castle Fabrics.
Becky is actually a friend of my MIL since 7th grade. Again, I'm so thankful that I met and married my husband, not only because I love him, but because through him, I have met (or become related to) some really wonderful people.

Speaking of becoming related to wonderful people and Alex, she suggested that next time she, my MIL, and I were together, we should do a Jelly Roll Race. I think that would be fun, so I already got my jelly roll from Becky.
Some of you may be saying "Huh? Why did she make that ugly animal thing? I don't get it." I was inspired to make this from this funny post.

Anyway, the sewing day!

I got there at about 8:00am and helped set up as people gradually arrived. Counting all people who came to participate, I would guess maybe there were around 16-18 total. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was really wanting to get stuff done.

I did finish this tote with the feather blocks.
At one point I asked the group if we should have more sewing days and the room resounded with "YES!!!", so we're hoping to do one each quarter. I really like these ladies. They all bring different skills and personalities and tastes to the group. They challenge me to try new things and make me smile with quick witted jokes or stories of their lives. I'm so glad I've found this group and look forward to knowing them more.
The word omnipresence isn't in the Bible, but the concept is.

Psalm 139 is a really good psalm teaching God's omnipresence. I have learned this fact about God in the past and I'm sure I've acknowledged it as a good thing, but I've recently been comforted by it.

If I belong to Him, it doesn't matter where I am. He is there as well. My son gets scared of the dark and I'll admit that I don't like to be in the basement in the dark and may or may not run up the stairs like something is chasing me if the lights go out. Verse 12 of Psalm 139 says "Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You." He is with me in dark places.

It can be actually kind of scary to think of God being everywhere though because I know that he sees my sinfulness. What if my heart is the dark place?

The end of the Psalm is comforting for me too. David, the psalm writer, asks God to search his heart and know his anxious thoughts and look for his hurtful ways. Why would he want God to show him His sinful thoughts? So that he can repent and be led in the everlasting way.

God's presence is to be a comfort because He loves us. He is the light we can cling to in dark places and if that dark place is our heart, He will clear out the dark and replace it with light if we repent and let Him be our God. I hadn't seen it in a while and we watched it as a family. It has a few scenes that are quite funny and highly quotable. Here are a couple good ones:

And as long as we're going with funny and quotable movie scenes, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is good for that also.
My husband and I decided that we should probably be more careful with both our diet and budget, so one thing I did was get the MealBoard App. It was kind of fun to get it all set up and use although I don't think we have followed the plan I made for the week at all! I take that back. I followed it Monday night. Anyway, I didn't buy a bunch of stuff we didn't need at the grocery store and I've planned some fairly healthy meals, so hopefully we'll be doing better.

I also went through our budget to see where we were leaking money. Guess where? Eating out. So minimizing that should help our waistlines and wallets too.

By the time I had worked on those things, it was Tuesday afternoon and I hadn't done any sewing since the Thursday before and I was looking forward to stitching some stuff up! Oh, by the way, the sewing I did on Thursday was one of the bee blocks for my quilt.
Anyway, so Tuesday I decided to take another stab at the Anna Maria Horner Feather Bed pattern that I had messed up previously. This time I read the directions a little bit. :) I ended up with six of them and they are kinda big.
I had thought of making a tote bag with three feathers on each side, but that would have been a really big tote, so I went with two on each side and then the two leftover feathers are becoming a table topper, I guess. Why not?

One night this week, my husband sat down at our piano and started to play. I like when he does that.

I remember when I was a teenager, my mom played piano for church and
would play and practice on Saturday mornings at probably a reasonable
hour. I, however, was sleeping in! I remember feeling so grumpy and
aggravated that she was disrupting my sleeping in, but now I feel
thankful that there were hymns being played on the piano in our house.
I understand the words of those hymns so much better now. And it's good to get them stuck in my head.

Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

The next part of the study so far for me has been to find instances of the words "sign", "believe", and "life" since those are key words in John's purpose for writing. It has been really neat to read John with that purpose in mind.

If you haven't read the book of John or it has been a long time, I highly recommend reading it, especially watching for those words and how they relate to the telling of John's gospel. My prayer is that you would know Jesus and believe in Him and have life in His name. The first is the Mo-Stash bee. Again, you can see what people in the group are making by clicking on the button to the right side of my blog with Tom Selleck on it.

The bee has several groups in it, each with 6 members. I was assigned to the Magnum P.I. group and given the month of January to choose a quilt block for each member of my group to make. I can't resist a rainbow of colors and I love wonky stars and it seemed a good use of several fabrics from each person's stash, so I chose this quilt. Each person in the group will make two blocks and I've already received four! It's so fun to open the mailbox and find squishies (Squishy --An envelope full of fabric, especially one
that comes in the mail as a result of an exchange or mail-order purchase.)

Squishies!

These are the blocks I have received. Pretty!

I let everybody in my group pick which colors they wanted to use and then took whichever two colors were left. I will be doing red-orange and light pink. I think I'll try to get the light pink one done today, but I'll save the red-orange one until I have the red block and the orange block so that I can pick my colors to fit in between the two well.

The other bee I've joined is the do. Good Stitches bee and I was assigned to the Harmony circle. There are 10 people in the group; 5 stitchers who just sew blocks together and send them in and 5 quilters who assemble the blocks and turn them into quilts. All quilts in do. Good Stitches go to various charities and the Harmony circle makes quilts that go to Project Linus.

For January, we were instructed to make low volume postage stamp quilt blocks using low volume prints and solids, with white, off-white, tan, pale grey backgrounds. Here are the three I made:

I'm not sure that I'd ever make a low volume quilt myself because I love bold colors so much, but it was fun to put these together and I'll be interested to see the final quilt.

Yesterday I made the crochet hook case for Crystal as exchange for the adorable owl hat she made for my niece. I looked up several tutorials and Crystal had sent me a few pictures of cases she liked. I had to kind of use bits and pieces from each tutorial and mostly I looked at one case in particular and tried to make something similar, with a couple minor changes. This is the link she sent me, so I take no credit for the design. I know people can get upset about designs, patterns, and such being copied or stolen, so I hope that this is not a problem. Crystal chose the fabrics and had certain specifications that she requested. So here's what I made:
Anyway, I guess there weren't many actual works in progress in this post, but I do still have several things I need to work on, like several of these things.

I figured it was best to keep that schedule and put God before fabric. :)

Yup, I bought a little more fabric and I don't intend to buy any more for a while. I like having a set amount of money I can spend and then trying to figure out the best deal. So here's what I got:
Okay! Time to go use this stuff!Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-72597369803392422262013-01-07T10:47:00.000-06:002013-01-07T10:47:19.645-06:00No.Sometimes God says no. It has been a bit discouraging because He seems to have said no to a few of my requests lately, but this morning I looked to His Word to see what the appropriate response is to Him when he says no.

One example of God saying no is in 2 Samuel 7. King David looks at his fancy cedar house and remembers that the ark of God is in a tent. His plan is to make a great temple for God. The prophet Nathan even thinks this is a pretty good plan. But then God tells David, through Nathan, that David will not be the one to build the temple. Was it because it was a bad plan? Nope. In 1 Kings 8:18, we are told that the Lord told David "Because it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was in your heart." God was pleased with David's heart. His request was not a bad one, but the answer was still no. Actually, God tells David that He will build a house for him. He's not talking about the fancy cedar one. He's talking about a descendant of David who will rule forever. He's talking about Jesus. David wanted to do something great for God, but God had something better in mind. David responds with worship and amazement at God's goodness.

Sometimes God says no because there is something better he has in mind and even if I don't know what that is, I should respond with worship.

Another example is in 2 Corinthians 12. Paul has had some pretty amazing experiences with God and so that he doesn't start bragging about them, he is given a "thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment". I'm not exactly sure what the torment was that Paul experienced, but he asked God to take it away three times. God said no. Paul's request was also not a bad one, but God had a plan for Paul, too. He told him "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Paul responds with contentment that the power of Christ is in him.

Sometimes God says no because He wants us to see His power in our weakness and even if the situation never changes, I should be content.

So instead of having a pity party and being discouraged, I will remind myself of His goodness, worship Him, and be content. A big winter storm blew in a few days before Christmas, allowing my son to have an even longer break from school, a chance to play in the snow, and a good excuse to drink some hot chocolate. I'm not a huge fan of winter, but the snow was pretty and it is nice to have a white Christmas.

We first celebrated with my husband's parents and his grandma on Christmas Eve and I gave my mother-in-law design walls.

Design walls

Each one is 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide, so there's plenty of space for sticking up quilt blocks to see how a quilt is all coming together. Actually, they are still at my house. I bought the foam insulation when I was still driving a van and now they won't fit in my new car. I'm hoping they'll fit in my in-law's CRV.

Since the foam insulation comes in an eight foot tall piece, I had the guy cut off two feet from each board and voila! I have two small design walls!

On Christmas day, we celebrated with my parents as well as my sister and her husband and kids. I think my son likes having a new baby cousin. :)
My parents love going to see lighthouses all over the place and are even going to Puerto Rico in March on a tour with the Lighthouse Society to see some there as well as enjoy a bit of warm weather.

After Christmas, we headed up to Michigan to celebrate with my husband's brother and his family. I never can read in the car, but for some reason I can stitch. So I traced this pattern onto some white fabric and stuck it in a hoop for stitching in the car. I was hoping to finish it on the way and give it to my sister-in-law as a gift, but we ran into a bit of bad weather and it got dark early so I was only mostly done when we arrived in Michigan. I finished stitching it up while we were there and I think she liked it. It reminded me of her and her children.
I also brought along some English Paper Piecing. I won a mini charm pack of Archtextures fabric and thought it would be perfect for EPP. Alex (my sister-in-law and now my design consultant) helped me figure out a way to put the pieces together and I'm really liking it. I just don't quite know what to do with them now. There are only 5 and I think I need to make a 6th, but I have no more of that fabric. I'm thinking I'll either make a pillow or tote bag unless someone else gives me a different brilliant idea.
I brought along some Shrinky Dink plastic to Michigan thinking that the kids would enjoy tracing and drawing designs and seeing them shrink in the oven. I was sure my son would think it was a really cool activity, but he had no interest. This was, however, I think before he was banned from playing the Nintendo DS. Anyway, the rest of the kids, my mother-in-law, my husband, and I enjoyed making them.
It was a good Christmas season, but I'm glad to be home again and to have laundry done (for at least one day) and the decorations down and to get back to a regular routine. Time spent with God is not as regular or as deep when life is busy, so I'm glad to be back to usual.

Tomorrow I'll post pics of what I bought with the various gift cards I was given. Can you guess what I might have purchased?
Also, we got a new camera and I've been taking a few pictures of things I could show you, but haven't read the manual to know how to get those pictures onto my computer yet. So...you can look forward to more exciting blog posts with pictures soon.Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-14667080112293805672012-12-17T10:36:00.001-06:002012-12-17T10:36:10.713-06:00SorrowWhere Shall We Put This Grief?Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583012431287449284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810830007518754829.post-17895061767765800812012-12-11T05:00:00.000-06:002012-12-11T05:00:16.585-06:00I e3`Q1``111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111
Hmm...well, I was trying to write a blog post, but the kitty found the cursor and my typing to be very fascinating and decided she needed a blog of her own, so she took over. The title and beginning line were her work. I think perhaps we should leave the blogging to the humans.

Anyway, I haven't been doing a whole lot of sewing lately. I suppose I've been preparing for a little children's Christmas program thing at church, researching getting a new car, getting a new car, and finishing reading this book.
I like my new-to-me car. I got rid of a van that was getting worse by the minute and making me really dislike it.
I enjoyed reading the book and have been asked to write a review, so I'll have to do that soon.

Since Tuesday is supposed to be Technique or Tool Tuesday and I have obviously not been figuring out EQ7 (during Christmas break - it's a plan!), maybe I'll mention the Sewline Glue Pen. I don't think I've mentioned it on the blog. I did a presentation to the Des Moines Modern Quilt Guild on English Paper piecing and discovered that I love this glue pen for holding the fabric onto the little shaped cardstock pieces. Well, I won a little mini charm pack (which is a stack of 2.5 inch squares) of Architextures so I was thinking that I might wrap those little squares around some hexagons and see what happens. If there is any interest, maybe I'll take pictures as I do the steps of English Paper Piecing and have a sort of mini-tutorial on using the glue stick and paper piecing.

Otherwise, I have cut up a bunch of red and green fabric in the hope that I will sew them together into Christmas stockings, following this pattern and a tree skirt or rather, tree pants, following this tutorial very soon...like this week. :)

I haven't shared anything from the Bible in a while either, so I'd like to do that soon, too.

Okay, I'll try to remember that I have a blog now.
Two days before it happened, my son was home sick. He may have watched too many movies during those two days while I prepared for the craft fair.

It was not the most profitable event, but Crystal and I had a good time and met some neat people. I think our booth was the best looking one in the place, but I might be biased.
The best sellers of the day were the chapstick cozies. There were two young girls who were very excited to each get a chapstick cozy. It was pretty cute.

I guess my conclusion in the matter is that while it was fun to do and I made a lot of stuff I like, I'll not do a craft fair again. I have been thinking again about my purpose for sewing and if it is to show love to God and others, I'm not completely sure how selling my stuff fits in there. I'm not saying it can't fit with my purpose. I need money to have supplies to make things to give to people and sucking money out of our bank account without putting any in is probably not wise. So I'll probably make some to sell, some for family and friends, and some for charitable purposes.

In the category of charitable purposes, I'm excited to have been invited to join an online bee called do. Good Stitches to make quilts for Project Linus. The do. Good Stitches group has several different sub-groups for different charities and I was assigned to Project Linus. I'll be stitching up blocks every month and sending them in to someone else who will put all the blocks together and make a quilt. One quilt will be made by the group each month.

My goal is to get back to my Romans quilt very soon, but I think I'm going to do just a few Christmas items first. We have no tree skirt. Well, not really. For several years I have been using an actual skirt that I had for some Christmas event in high school. Also, I'd like to make new stockings for me, my husband, and my son.

Okay, so back on track with blogging. My son is healthier and back at school, the craft fair is done, and the Christmas sewing I have to do is not going to be frantic and sucking up all my time. I will enjoy it.

So I was feeling mostly out of steam for the craft fair, but I decided that I needed to have money in something. A box didn't seem pretty or all that practical because there's not much room in an 8'x8' booth. We're using up most of our room to display our stuff. So I followed this tutorial and made an apron.

I like it. There are four pockets so I think I'll keep money in them like this: ones & pennies, fives & nickels, tens & dimes, and twenties & quarters.

The other thing I think will be really useful at the craft fair is the Square Register and iPad app. I can take credit card payments with the little square thing I plug into the iPad and the app looks really good. I have set it to automatically calculate state sales tax for each item and I can have pictures and prices of my inventory. I just tap on the picture and it goes to the register. And if people pay with cash and want a receipt, I can enter their email and the app sends a receipt. Pretty cool.

So, actual works in progress other than the ridiculously long list are making signs that show prices for our items, getting the Square App all full of our products, and maybe I'll do a little last minute sewing. I made this Union Jack pillow and it was my first sale, so I think I'll make some more.
After the craft fair, I hope my WIP Wednesdays will be more interesting and I can show progress on those things that are sitting there calling to me.

Oh, and Linda informed me that Tom Selleck's mustache doesn't work! Shoot. I'll try to get that fixed.
It's a long section, so I'm not going to type it all out, but you can read it here. So it starts out that Jesus feeds more than five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. The people like a free meal and full bellies so the next day they go looking for Jesus hoping for more. He's on the other side of the lake because He walked on the water in the middle of the night and then hopped in the boat with His disciples. Anyway, the people hop in their boats, find Jesus and He tells them that they are just looking for another free meal and that they should be working for food that leads to eternal life. They want to know what work that is and he tells them that they need to believe in Him. They, still wanting to get a free meal out of Jesus, basically tell him "We'll believe you if you give us some more food. Moses gave our fathers food every day!" So Jesus tells them that God gives the true bread from heaven for life and they are like "Yeah, give us some of that always!" Jesus makes it even clearer for them. He's the bread. Feeding your soul is more important than feeding your belly.

Reading this has challenged me. I like to feed my belly and have material stuff and enjoy things around me. None of that is necessarily bad, but Jesus wants me to love Him more. I need to be hungry for the true bread. I need to put time with Him and time in His Word as priority above physical needs. This is an especially appropriate time to be reminded of this. We get busy enjoying the holidays and can forget to enjoy Him. So before we stuff another tasty butter slathered roll in our mouths, let's remember to feed our souls with the true bread and spend time in the Word and in prayer.
